Last Sunday, during the celebration of El Dia de los Muertos in Mission Plaza, Susan Lara danced, with her usual graceful; ardor, wearing a donkey head. At a time and place in which the ancestors were present, this felt not so much like a political statement from the present ailing institution known as the Democratic Party, but more as an homage to, and evocation of, ancestors who, under the sign of the donkey, had created and sustained most of the public policies that now make US lives tenable. The wisdom and energy of those ancestors is needed now, at a time when the elephant in the room is gathering strength for a rampage, beacuse it has become obvious that the Democratic Party, as it exists today, hamstrung by the demands of an empire it has failed to resist violently expanding, is an inadequate vessel for resisting the elephant rampage, or for uplifting the populace. It is up to us to shape the forms that will promote genuine public uplift, with the help of those who presently follow the donkey but have questioned its direction, a few defectors from riding the elephant, and a contingent that has stayed clear of identification with either creature and who can help us envision and create new pathways and new forms. While our path forward now looks even steeper than it had, its very steepness, and the very intensity of the challenge we face, may result, ultimately, in a more powerful uplift leading us to become a nation reconceived not only in liberty but in compassion.
Fascinating dream!!

Well said, Eric! Thanks again for your reflective and wise responses. I’m completely in agreement with your vision, as I so often am.
